FLOATING ROOF SEALS

Mesa ETP is the exclusive carrier of WG Seals, an industry leader of primary and secondary floating roof seals for aboveground storage tanks. Mesa ETP engineers each product to meet unique circumstances, including floating roof and rim characteristics, tank profile, product stored, schedule and economic situation. WG Seals primary and secondary floating roof seals and foam dams have a proven record of success and are used by most major oil companies.

Compression plate secondary seals, "in service" installation, multiple contact point secondary seals, double wiper tip seals, anti hang-up devices and rim mounted foam dams - now accepted standards in the industry - were all pioneered by Mesa ETP engineers and represent the Best Available Control Technology (BACT). WG Seals has over 4000 primary and secondary floating roof seals installed worldwide.

SEAL SELECTION

Primary Seal for Floating Roof Tank
A primary seal should be considered for all floating roof tanks, and listed below are a variety of choices. Mechanical shoe seals and resilient filled seals (i.e. liquid-filled tube seals and foam log seals) are the two main primary seal types. Tube and foam log seals risk "puncture", which would render them useless and represent environmental waste in disposal. They do, however, provide a "soft" connection against the tank which may be beneficial if the inside surface of the tank shell has a finished paint system. A mechanical shoe seal, which generally has a longer life span than either the tube seal or the foam log seal, represents the Best Available Control Technology available today.

Two optional mechanical shoe seals are available; both offering "in-service" installation. The Channel Hanger seal is the more economic system, and is generally utilized in new tank construction and for retrofits where the annulus is in the "normal" range. Where significant out-of-roundness or unusual rim space measurements are found, a Compression Shoe seal is available. The Compression Shoe seal, which can provide a significant force along 90% of the circumference of the tank shell, helps minimize the potential for gaps between the shoe and the tank shell.

Secondary Seal for Floating Roof Tank
Secondary Seals are normally required for external floating roof tanks, and may or may not be required when an external roof covers the floating roof. However, some localities require a secondary seal on a covered floating roof if the primary seal is a vapor mounted seal. Mechanical shoe seals, by their nature, are liquid mounted, and both tube and foam log seals can be liquid mounted. A compression plate secondary seal has a longer life than a "flapper". While the "flapper" offers a lower profile, it may not stand up against the environment of the stored product vapors, and therefore not be an appropriate choice. The Duo-Tip offers a lower profile than the 5" flat wiper when compression plate secondary seals are chosen.

Double Seal Combinations
A variety of double seal combinations exist as a mix-n-match of all available primary and secondary seals shown, as well as Double Wiper Tip seals, which offer a unique selection.

Considerations for API

The American Petroleum Institute (API) does not define which floating roof seals should be utilized on any particular set of circumstances, but allows the end user to utilize the most appropriate set of floating roof seals. Refer to Standard API 650.

The API has, however, done generic testing for emissions based on the following combinations of seals: Mechanical Shoe Seal, Resilient Filled Seal (both vapor mounted and liquid mounted), along with combinations of these seals with rim mounted secondary seals. The testing concluded that utilization of a liquid mounted primary seal (e.g. metallic shoe seal, or liquid mounted resilient filled seal) in combination with a rim mounted secondary seal provided a significant reduction in emissions when compared to primary seals alone. Refer to API Manual of Petroleum Measurement Standards Chapter 19.1 and 19.2 (formerly API standard API 2517 and API 2519).

Floating Roof Pontoon Repair Liners

Mesa ETP custom designs floating roof pontoon repair liners pontoon liners for floating roof storage tanks. Mesa ETP floating roof pontoon repair liners are inserted into floating roof pontoons that have taken on liquid from the storage tank. The pontoon liner is installed inside the pontoon and inflated to displace product and keep the roof afloat. Mesa ETP’s floating roof pontoon repair liners are most commonly used in pontoons that have begun to leak. Leaking pontoons can fill with product from the tank causing the floating roof to sink. Sunken roofs can cause a range of undesirable situations in the tank. The floating roof can be severely damaged if it sinks into the product. A sinking roof can damage the shell and floor of the tank. Floating roof pontoon repair liners provide additional buoyancy to pontoons, allow for stabilization of the floating roof, help prevent sunken roof, avoid tank and roof damage, avoid environmental hazards or violations, and avoid costly cleanup and decontamination procedures.

Foam Delivery Fire Suppression System

The Mesa ETP foam delivery fire suppression system is an efficient method to extinguish rim fires on floating roof storage tanks located in refineries, pipelines and tank terminals. Mesa ETP’s foam delivery fire suppression system is designed to provide fast delivery of fire extinguishing foam through pipelines in the center of the tank and directly out to the tank rim areas. The standard Mesa ETP foam delivery fire suppression system is designed using RESIST-ALL-CLAD® Flexible Pipe. RESIST-ALL-CLAD® is designed for continuous service in a wide range of pH solutions and chemicals. It is completely compatible with pure M.T.B.E., 100% aromatic hydrocarbons, pure alcohol, gasoline and jet fuels. RESIST-ALL-CLAD® features a fully controlled, repetitive lay pattern (multiple coil). RESIST-ALL-CLAD® assemblies offer a service life expectancy of up to 20 years provided the system is sized, installed and operated in the designed service. RESIST-ALL-CLAD® features a tether system that keeps the drain in position as installed. Tethers are attached to the underside of the floating roof and between ballasts on the flexible pipe for a precise lay pattern.

Foam Delivery System Design

A.

From the proportioning and pumping equipment positioned outside the dike wall, a high back pressure foam generator is used to direct fire extinguishing foam through rigid pipe to the base of the tank shell. The pipe passes through the tank shell and extends to a point near the center of the tank.

B.

Mesa ETP's RESIST-ALL-CLAD® smooth bore flexible foam line is attached to the rigid pipe within the tank and is connected to a double flanged spool piece mounted to the roof.

C.

On top of the roof, a multiple port foam distribution manifold is mounted to the spool piece. This manifold is sized according to NFPA guidelines, which determine the required G.P.M. and number of discharge outlets for the tank’s diameter and seal rim space area.

D.

From the distribution manifold outlets, flex-connectors and radial piping are used to transport the foam across the floating roof directly to the rim seal area regardless of the position of the roof.

Roof Seal Area Guidelines

Consult NFPA 11 Standard for Low-, Medium-, and High-Expansion Foam, which covers the design, installation, operation, testing, and maintenance of low-, medium-, and high-expansion and compressed air foam systems. The primary and secondary roof seal area is a critical point in the system design. Above seal applications require a foam dam and normally a longer discharge time. If the tank is equipped with a secondary seal made from a non-combustible material, the foam can be discharged below the secondary seal and will not require a foam dam. This enables the system to discharge 100% of the foam over the rim seal area in the shortest time.

Benefits to Mesa ETP Foam Delivery Fire Suppression System

• Ensures rapid response
• Directly delivers foam to rim area
• EFRT and IFRT compatible
• Operates with minimal maintenance
• Reduces risk of serious property damage or injury
• Provides economical solution
• Engineered to NFPA guidelines
• Integrates with tank design

Pontoon Oil Skimmer System

Mesa ETP oil skimmer systems are a proven solution for draining a light liquid product off the top of a heavier product in a cone or dome roof storage tank. The skimmer floats on the top product (ex. oil over water) to collect the lighter of two non-mixable liquids. The liquid is then drained through Mesa ETP’s RESIST-ALL-CLAD® flexible pipe and out of the tank through the shell nozzle. RESIST-ALL-CLAD® features high aromatic resistance and a smooth internal fluidway for maximum liquid flow. Skimmer components are made of stainless steel to perform in the most corrosive product environments. The vortex breaker at the intake fitting ensures optimal flow as the fluid starts into the skimmer conduit. The intake is adjustable during installation. Oil skimmer systems are engineered using information from the customer supplied data sheet. For more information on flow rates, chemical resistance and production application of the pontoon skimmer systems contact us to talk to a tank expert.

Mesa ETP skimmer systems can also be adapted for use in internal floating roof tanks as well as external floating roof tanks. Instead of using pontoons to float on the liquid, Mesa ETP floating roof skimmers are attached to the roof to keep the intake-to-roof distance constant.

For more information about Mesa ETP floating roof skimmer systems, talk to a tank expert.

Features

Stainless pontoons

Stainless steel pontoons ensure proper flotation of entire assembly. All oil skimmer components are designed to pass through a 20” or 24” manway

Vortex Breaker
